It was established for the protection of environment and conservation of forests along with other natural resources. Their head office is at New Delhi. The four other zonal benches of NGT are located at Bhopal, Kolkata, Pune and Chennai.

Under Pay Scale of Rs.15600-39100/-, 4 posts are for Deputy Registrar, 5 posts are for Assistant Registrar and 1 post is for Principal Private Secretary. Under Pay Scale of Rs.9300-34800/-, 6 posts are for Section Officer, 12 posts are for Assistant, 21 posts are for Private Secretary, 21 posts are for Stenographer Grade-C / Court Master, 1 post is for Hindi Officer, 5 posts are for Hindi Translator and 1 post is for Accounts Officer.
Under Pay Scale of Rs.5200-20200/-, 12 posts are for Stenographer Grade-D and 5 posts are for Accountant.
