Maharashtra is third largest state of India. It has 6 regions and 35 districts. The forest of Maharashtra covers approximately 20% of its geographical area. It means about 61,939 sq km covered by forest out of 3,07,713 sq km.

The mission of the forest department is to develop forest resources, improvement in productivity, protection of environment and alleviation of poverty by activate the sector by catalyzing the involvement of stakeholders by being a responsive and transparent learning organization. There are three main public forestry institutions such as Maharashtra forest department, the forest development corporation of Maharashtra and the directorate of social forestry. Forests play an important role at local, regional and national level. They fulfill the basic needs of poor forest dwellers and tribes and meet the requirement of forest based industries. The main aim of forest department is of conservation of forestry and development of forest region.

Forestry is beneficial to agriculture as it promotes agro industrial economy. The main activity of Maharashtra forest department is conservation of wildlife, soil conservation and meeting the demand of people in respect of timber, firewood and other minor products. The department protects forest from various types of pressures such as fire, illicit cutting of trees and poaching of wild animals. The department undertakes regeneration of soil and moisture, wildlife management, Weeding and timber cutting.
