Union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi finally announced the Railway Budget 2012. There were first hike in passenger fares in last 10 years. Rs 12 hiked over 300 km journey. 10 pc/ km hike in AC fares. 2 paise/km to 30 paise/km increase in fares.

According to Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi, Indian Railways will recruit 100,000 employees in 2012 / 2013 to overcome a disturbing staff crunch in technical and safety-related areas. There are recruitments will be in various categories of staff.

"With these recruitments, Indian Railways will also be wiping out the backlog vacancies of SC/ST/OBC and physically challenged persons -- and complying with the instructions of DOP&T," Minister said.

In the current FY2012, the Indian railways recruited 80,000 employees, against a Budget target of 29,000 employees announced by the then Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. Notification would be issued every July for filling the anticipated number in these categories.
