Assam University was established in 1994. It is become an excellent centre of learning. Their campus is situated in Dargakona, at distance of 20 kms from Silchar. They have very big campus in 600 acres surrounded by lakes and mountains.

The university sustains a multidisciplinary approach to higher education. It has sixteen Schools on major disciplines. They are gradually started attracting students from the neighboring states.
It is situated in South Assam, bordering Bangladesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Maghalaya, and Nagaland. The five districts under the jurisdiction of Assam University have as many as 53 Colleges, which speak of the depth of the intellectual and educational interests in the region.
